With a total area of over 3 million square kilometers, India is the seventh largest country in the world. It is located in South Asia and most of the country forms a peninsula between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
India is the second most populous country in the world, only China has more citizens. In 2021, India has approximately 1.3 billion residents, which is a sixth of the world´s total population. The population is highly diverse as there are thousands of ethnic groups and religions.
While the country has a large rural population, it also has three metropolitan cities Mumbai, Calcutta and India´s capital New Dehli. Hyderabad, Madras and Bangalore are some of the fastest growing high-tech centres centers in the world. Although those cities have well-developed infrastructure, the rural areas are still very poor which leads to domestic challenges such as economic inequality as the gap between rich and poor grows.
India is a constitutional republic. The current Head of Government is the Prime Minister Narendra Modi (December 2021). The President Ram Nath Kovind (December 2021) is also the Head of State. Since India became independent from Britain in 1947, it is a member of the Commonwealth. Hindi and English are official languages. The currency are Indian rupee, one euro is about 85 rupee.
